DRUG ADDICTIONS

Drug addictions can occur from long-term drug use or short-term drug use. They can occur if you are taking prescription drugs, over the counter drugs, or illegal drugs. They can even occur if the drugs you are using are not known as addictive. One sure fire way to prevent drug addiction is to leave them alone.

There are many characteristics that can let one know if they are addicted to drugs, such as:

-The need to use the drug on a daily basis
-Using the drug to cope with problems in your life
-Failing after many repeated attempts to stop using the drug
-Resorting to crime or violence just to obtain the drug
-Always having a supply of the drug on hand

Physical drug addiction occurs when your body has cravings for drugs that will not leave until the drug is used. If these cravings are not fulfilled, usually the user will have withdrawal symptoms such as irritability, depression, nausea, insomnia, and diarrhea to name a few. Other drugs, such as alcohol, can cause withdrawal symptoms that are much worse such as fevers and convulsions. In some cases, drug addiction can be so strong that even after being diagnosed with a life-threatening illness as a result of the drug, the user may still use it anyway. Many drug addictions can be treated with medication to make the detoxification period easier on the addict once they have decided to quit using drugs.

Psychological drug addictions can occur when someone isn’t dependent on the drug physically, but still feel they need it to get by. Peer pressure can cause psychological addiction by making you believe you need drugs or alcohol to have a good time. Lots of times people will use stress as a reason to turn to drugs. Drugs can provide temporary relief, but once the effects wear off you can feel worse that you did initially. With psychological addiction, you are less likely to receive withdrawal symptoms, however they may still occur.
