DRUG ABUSE

Drug abuse is defined as the habitual or excessive use of an illicit or prescription drug. Some of the most commonly abused drugs include marijuana, alcohol, nicotine, cocaine, heroin, prescription medications, and steroids. However, there are many more drugs that get abused as well. Drug abuse can be very dangerous leading to addiction, disease, and even death.

It may start out as a few times here and there to have a little fun. But eventually it all catches up and you realize it’s been months or years and you’re still using drugs, coming up with every reason in the book to justify it. You start stealing from people or doing things you wouldn’t normally do for money just to keep up your habit. This could eventually cause you to lose sight of your goals and maybe even cause you to lose your current job. Some of this may seem a little extreme, but many people go through this each year. The majority of these people regret ever touching drugs in the first place.

Many drug abusers also lose certain inhibitions while intoxicated and are more likely to participate in dangerous sexual activities, which could result in the transmission of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, or many other types of sexually transmitted diseases. Sharing needles is another common way that drug abusers transmit such diseases.

Sexually transmitted diseases aren’t the only thing to worry about when abusing drugs and living carelessly. Drugs eventually take a toll on your body causing many other ailments such as cancer, irregular heartbeat, heart attack, depression, and liver or kidney failure just to name a few. Everyone’s bodies work differently so there’s no timeline to predict how long a person can use drugs before something bad can happen. It can happen the first time, the 50th time, or maybe never at all. The best thing a person can do is never touch drugs in the first place. If drug use is prevalent, stopping immediately would greatly reduce the chances of anything bad happening. If it’s too hard to stop cold turkey and stay off of drugs, it may be a good idea to check into a rehabilitation center.
